Stock Tank Maintenance
Keeping Your Stock Tank Safe and Clean
To maintain a clean and safe stock tank pool, a small pool pump and water treatment are essential. A 300 GPH (gallons per hour) pump is sufficient to keep the water clear but for improved performance, a 530 GPH pump can be used but may increase running costs slightly. Both pump sizes typically use 32mm hoses, as explained in our hot tub section.
Most users opt for a small chlorine floater with dissolvable chlorine tablets to keep the water free from bacteria. Ensure chlorine tablets are placed in the floater and not directly on the bottom of the tank, as this can damage the galvanised coating.
For optimal water quality, we recommend using pH test strips to maintain a pH level between 7.4 and 7.6.
If you’re using a smaller oval tank for an ice bath or hot tub, you may prefer to change the water regularly. To extend the time between refills, consider adding sterilising solution, such as Sainsbury's "Little Ones" double-concentrated baby bottle steriliser. For our oval tanks, use the following amounts:
- 4ft: 12ml
- 5ft: 15ml
- 6ft: 20ml
- 7ft: 25ml
If you’re using a different brand of steriliser, adjust the quantities based on its concentration.
After about a week, check the water's pH levels. If adjustments are needed, add 50g of bicarbonate of soda per 100 litres of water (tank volumes are listed on each product page). Repeat the addition of sterilising solution as necessary.
